NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2004

Dear Member,

Welcome to another year and a change of Chairman.  After putting in three years of sterling service, Ian was obliged to stand down (much to his relief I’m sure) and you’re now lumbered with me.  My thanks to Ian for all the hard work he has done for the society over recent years.  The rest of the Committee is largely unchanged from last year, with the addition of Jo Emery as Membership Secretary, and Anne Clarke as a general Committee member.

The Committee are listed below – please feel free to contact any one them with any comments or concerns, or indeed anything that you would like included in future newsletters.

Cricket Match

Our final social event of the year was the now traditional cricket match between ourselves and Radlett Cricket Club.  We had a very good turnout for this, even managing to get a team of eleven together !  I’m pleased to report that, in a nail-biting finish, Radlett Players triumphed off the last ball of the evening.  Any suspicions that they let us win are of course entirely unfounded.  My thanks to the Cricket Club for hosting us, Willum for organising the team and of course Rosemary for providing a wonderful meal, as always.

Autumn Production

As I’m sure you’re all aware, the Autumn production is Gaslight, produced by Ingrid Watkins.

Auditions will be held at West Herts Training (contact myself or Ingrid for directions) on 6 September.  Rehearsals will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, starting on 20 September at West Herts.

Please see the attached note from Ingrid giving more information on the play and characters.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are due again I’m afraid, although the good news is there’s no increase from last year.  Rates are:

Single:                                              £18 or £26 after 30 September

Family:                                              £29 or £37 after 30 September

Patrons/Students/Senior Citizens:  £13 or £18 after 30 September

Jo will be pleased to receive your money either in the post or at our first get together of the season, see below for more details.

Social Events

The new Committee have already met and planned the social events for the coming year.  Those of you with long memories will recall the small cards we used to produce detailing committee members and dates of the year’s events. Willum has kindly offered to resurrect these and I hope they will be available in time to be posted with the next Newsletter.

In the meantime, the opening season get together will be held on Monday 13th September in the Village Institute.  This will be a games evening, similar to last year.  The Committee will be providing a wide variety of games for all ages and abilities, but please feel free to bring along that Pop Idol board game that you got from Auntie Nelly last Christmas, or indeed anything else that you’ve been dying to try out.  This is also an opportunity to drum up new members for the society and show them what a fun-loving group we are, so spread the word and let’s hope for a good turn out.

Accounts

Those of you at the AGM will remember that we were unable to get the accounts signed off by the auditor in time for the meeting.  I’m now pleased to report that they have been approved with no changes, so the copies you received at the AGM are in fact correct.

Theatre Trips

The Watford Palace Theatre is re-opening shortly after a lengthy and costly refurbishment programme.  Ian has volunteered to organise trips to most of their forthcoming productions, although he will need at least ten people to get a group discount and make it worthwhile.  Please give Ian a ring on 01923 855944 if you’re interested in going.

And finally….. apologies for the length of this Newsletter but there always seems to be a lot of information to impart at the beginning of a new season.  I shall try and keep future issues a bit shorter.

Best wishes

Chairman
